Hlavní hrdina, Duncan MacLeod, je stejně jako jeho filmový „kolega“ Connor MacLeod člen skotského klanu MacLeodů. Seriál pokračuje v příběhu, který byl naznačen ve stejnojmenných filmech. Duncan se narodil roku 1592 v horách ve Skotsku a je stále naživu – je nesmrtelný. Již 400 let čelí ostatním nesmrtelným v boji o svůj život. Vítěz souboje připraví protivníka o hlavu a získá tím i jeho sílu. Na konci však může zůstat pouze jeden…
